Warsaw Varsity Cheer Wins Big in the 2014 Battle at the Capitol

Team Cheer is excited to congratulate the Warsaw Varsity Cheerleaders, a local team, on their big win this weekend at the 2014 Battle at the Capitol - School, Rec and Small All-stars. The cheer team is now a National Champion cheerleading team!

The 2014 Battle at the Capitol - School, Rec and Small All-stars was a three day competition that took place in National Harbor, MD. The event was hosted by Coastal Cheer and Dance, a leading provider of cheerleading and dance competitions across the east coast. Competitive cheerleading is a fierce sport which combines athleticism and precision, involving aspects of both dance and gymnastics. This weekend's competition was for scholastic, recreational, and small all-star cheer teams. Event registration began on Friday March 28th, competitions were held all weekend and concluded with the awards ceremony on Sunday night. Warsaw competed both days. The Warsaw team took away several titles from the battle, including winning the varsity intermediate division, as well as Grand Champion and National Champion titles.

The Warsaw Varsity Cheerleaders are led by cheer coach Melissa Coveny-Countermine. Coveny-Countermine is a lifelong cheerleader. Although Coveny-Countermine has been a cheer coach for 9 years, only 2 of those years have been with the Warsaw team. Coach Coveny-Countermine stated the girls were very excited about their win, "First in our division, and first out of all high school teams. National Champions now!"

"It was insane. We had no idea we were going to win. We were ranked 1st after day one but the other teams were great," says Coach Coveny-Countermine, explaining that although the girls had worked hard and done their best, their win was an amazing surprise. Team Cheer is happy to extend their congratulations to Coach Coveny-Countermine and the Warsaw team, and although this is the team's first championship title, we believe it will not be their last. Coach Coveny-Countermine's goal? "I only have one coach goal left to achieve before I retire; sectionals." For now, Warsaw has secured a place among the top cheerleaders on the east coast. Everyone will know when they see those black and orange cheer uniforms, the tigers are coming.
